Port Hacking Outriggers Canoe Club is celebrating a remarkable international success after its Golden Master Men's crew claimed gold at the 2026 IVF Va'a World Sprint Championships in Singapore. Competing against some of the world's strongest paddling nations, including Tahiti and New Zealand, the crew produced a stunning performance in the V6 500m final to be crowned world champions.

The Port Hacking paddlers found themselves sitting in third place with just 100 metres remaining, but surged home to take the lead and secure an unforgettable gold medal. The result means the Port Hacking crew is the fastest Golden Master Men's V6 crew in the world over 500m.

The team's success did not stop there, also claiming a silver medal in the V12 500m and a bronze medal in the V6 1000m event, capping off a highly successful championship campaign for the Australian representatives.

The crew raced under the name "Team Tommy", a tribute to much-loved Port Hacking Outriggers Canoe Club member and Cronulla local Tommy Crowley, who sadly lost his battle with cancer two years ago.

"The championships were about much more than medals," said Pete Williams, coach and steerer of the Golden Master Men's crew and Tommy's mate. 

"Every race carried Tommy's name, spirit and memory, making the gold medal victory particularly meaningful for teammates, family members and supporters who have shared the journey.

"Bringing home a world title in Tommy's honour was an emotional moment for the crew whom had paddled alongside him for years and shared a close friendship with him both on and off the water.

Wearing the Team Tommy name on the international stage was a way of ensuring his legacy remained part of the club he loved."

Club president Denise Bennett said the Golden Master Men's crew was no stranger to success, having competed and performed strongly at major events both within Australia and internationally over many years.

"The Singapore campaign was another chapter in a proud racing history, but one that will undoubtedly hold a special place in the hearts of everyone involved," she said.
